Meet Diane Main

Diane Main
Director of Learning, Innovation and Design @ The Harker School, San Jose, CA.

Why did you decide to be a teacher? “I sort of fell into teaching, but I am glad I did. It changed me as a person. And it helped mold the parent I would one day become as well. I discovered that I have always loved learning, and every student I have ever taught has truly taught me so much more”.

What do you love most about teaching? “Young people are wonderful. Also, I always get to try new things. If I’m not having fun, and the kids aren’t having fun, we are all doing something wrong. I try to always put my relationship with my students above the content of the course, which to me is less important. It has paid off in the reward of seeing them become even more wonderful adults”.

What do you think is the meaning of being a connected educator? “Knowing that you don’t know everything, but that the sum knowledge and experience of the people you know comes pretty close to covering everything. Being a connected educator means modeling for your learners that you, too, are a lifelong learner and you value the input of everyone around you who shares your goals and vision”.
